Windows 7 (64-Bit) won't boot

My stepdaughter's laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit) shut down on her unexpectedly a week ago while during the course of normal operation and then has refused to boot Windows ever since. Have attempted several possible fixes including using a Boot Disk (created with my wife's laptop, which is also Windows 7 64-bit) to attempt a Startup Repair (no errors found) and System Restore (which has failed twice on two different restore points- I'm making another attempt). No hardware problems that the system could detect. Also created a BitDefender virus scan boot disk which was run and found 1 Trojan virus, which was removed. Any suggestions (other than completely re-installing Windows, which can't be done since it was a floor model and did not come with install disc)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm totally stumped at this point. Thanks!

Hello butlerd,

Although that one bootdisk scan located what he indicates is a trojan, I sense this issue had best be checked for non-malware issues first, so I moved your request to the CTH Windows 7 forum.

Boot from the disk again and open a command prompt. See here for more help (it's the same for W7).

After the prompt, type:

chkdsk c: /r

after the prompt and hit Enter. It will take a while to run but keep an eye on it. Did it find any errors on the volume and are you still unable to boot into Windows?
