Hard drive system32 corrupted or missing

I have this hard drive with windows xp on it and I cant get it to boot up. It brings up an error message saying some windows system32 file is missing or corrupt. If I try to boot from CD with a windows xp cd in the drive to repair it, it gives me blue screen of death. I plugged in the hard drive into my external hard drive enclosure on my other desktop and the drive had a virus on it which I removed. I also ran chkdsk on it and it fixed a couple things. What can I do to get this drive to boot up properly? Is there anything I can do while its plugged in as an external drive to make this easier? Thanks for your help.

What brand hardrive is it? while the drive is still in the enclosure, grab the drive manufacterer's utilities and run their diagnostic software on the drive. If the tests come back clean, you can follow the steps in the Microsoft suppot article, and fix the errors.
