Am I risking a virus in my flat screen tv?
I download videos, audio and pix to a usb flash drive that inserts directly into my big screen LG television set. The tv will pretty much play anything that I put on a key chain flash drive: lots of formats of video, audio, pix, and on and on.
Am I risking a virus or trojan horse in the tv by putting downloaded stuff into it? I don't know what operating system or software it runs; there doesn't seem to be any antivirus or firewalls back through to the cable box and the cable modem and there doesn't appear to be any way to reinstall an OS if it comes to that. So I figure I can do a lot of damage if that is a real risk. The tv also serves as monitor for my kid's computer, could a virus or trojan horse run backwards along the VGA cable and pollute the computer? Or backwards along an HDMI cable to pollute my blu-ray player which has a network connection? Thanks. Last edited by Total Noob; June 20th, 2012 at 05:15 PM. |

Hello,
so far I never heard of any viruses corrupting HD TV or blu-ray player. Only problem I can think of you may run into is file infected with virus making it unable to play. Majority of viruses are designed to "attack" computers and laptops. Best suggestion is check LG web site. As for re-installing operating system for your LG there is a way around it. I have Philips blu-ray home theater and from time to time Philips offers patches to update "operating system" for it. My advice is, check LG site and see if they offer something similar. Also, don't forget anything you download (movies, audios, pix and etc) of the internet is potentially unsafe as there is no guarantees what you are getting. Be carefull because if you damage TV first question insurance companies normally ask is: "How did this happen?" I hope this helps...good luck |
