Error repeats like clockwork

I have a problem which reoccurs every 48 hours without fail and I have exhausted all of my ideas so hope for help here. System info.:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 1015 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family, 128 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 232868 MB, Free - 201140 MB; D: Total - 1430796 MB, Free - 696810 MB; E: Total - 5585 MB, Free - 330 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., Goldfish2, 1.xx, X312345678
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled
This desktop has always run pretty much 24/7 but a few months ago, every second day, I find the screen stacked with 5-6 error messages. When I close the top message to see what is under it, they all disappear. The connection to the internet is down and the machine is pretty much dysfunctional. Rebooting sets everything right until the second morning when this repeats. If I reboot every morning, the problem does not occur.
Virus scans are clean, malwear scans ditto and I have nothing set to run every other day. Memtest86 has run 20 cycles with no errors and disc checks show nothing. The one message that is on top is “The exception unknown software exception (0x-40000015) occurred in the application at location 0x00447da0. Click OK to terminate the program.”

Can you help?

Sounds like a HEAT problem taking 2 days to build up then shuts itself down. Have you cleaned inside the case lately? Restricted air flow can cause it, as you say it runs 24/7...

Murf,
I thought of that but, no. There was very little dust and the case is cool with no fan noise. Just cleaned two days ago. I took it outside and blew it out with compressor.

Check your programs that automatically up date, like Anti-Virus, Windows Update, maybe one of them is set to update every 2 days????

Hi Murf,
My very first thought. "Virus scans are clean, malwear scans ditto and I have nothing set to run every other day." Should have added AS FAR AS I KNOW. This is still the case.

Using Event Viewer, I see there is a large number of errors clustered around the time of failure in the System Log. I went several days, re-booting every day and then skipped and allowed the problem to occur. If the logs were inspected by someone more knowledgeable than me, they might provide a clue or even an answer, don't you think?
I see the logs can be exported in four different formats if only I knew which was preferable and to whom to send them.

The computer is one of two on a home work group. It is named HOME with the other named PRO. The names reflect the versions of XP running on each machine. I had a devil of a time getting them to play nice with each other. It was several weeks (if not months) later that the problem started but I've worried it might be related.

The only other thought rattling around in my head (re:this) is the fact that my ip address is not static as I understand it. I have a cable connection through a modem and router with a wireless link to each computer. IF the ip address DOES change, as I've been told, I have no idea how often or if it's random.

  1. In the console tree, expand Event Viewer, and then right-click the log in which you want to archive, and then click Save Log File As.
  2. Specify a file name and location where you want to save the file. In the Save as type box, click the format that you want, and then click Save.
Save it as a TXT file, which you can attach here, but limited to 100KB, if yours is bigger you can reduce it to only the errors by:
  1. In the console tree, expand Event Viewer, and then click the log that contains the event that you want to view.
  2. On the View menu, click Filter.
  3. Click the Filter tab (if it is not already selected).
  4. Specify the filter options that you want, and then click OK.
Quick Filters is a comfortable way to filter event list by a single criterion.

To set a filter, find an event that meets your criteria, then click right mouse button on the cell of this event that you consider as the "criterion cell". The Event List context menu will appear.

The following quick filter criteria are available:
Column Name = Selected Value
Column Name <> Selected Value
Date >= Date of the current event (option is available if the user pops menu up from the Date column).
Date <= Date of the current event (option is available if the user pops menu up from the Date column).
Date&Time>= Date&Time of the current event (option is available if the user pops menu up from the Time column).
Date&Time <= Date&Time of the current event (option is available if the user pops menu up from the Time column).
You can apply quick filters one by one - this lets you to narrow filtered list easy and clearly.

Murf,
I have the text file (reduced to errors) but, upon reading "Posting rules", it appears I am not allowed to post attachments. So close and yet...

Murf,
Ken smacks his forehead sharply then copy's and pastes...

The event happened between 8:15 PM on 7/8 and when I rebooted at ~3:30 PM on 7/9.

In Event Viewer, double-click on one of the errors. I would click on;
Error 7/8/2012 10:05:56 PM Server None 2505 N/A HOME

A box will pop up with some technical info and saying: "For more information, see Help and Support Center at so and so.... Click on
this link and (provided you are online) Help will open up with a
description of the problem and advice on what to do about it.

Are you by chance using McAfee anti-virus?

DCOM Event ID 10001 error is generally caused by Not enough memory available. You indicate that you have:

RAM: 1015 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family, 128 Mb

Is this right? maybe 1GB memory and your graphics is using 128 MB of it? If so you need to add memory.

Hi Murf,
I had noticed that event and looked at it a couple of times. It made no sense to me because, as I said, there are two machines on the network named Pro and Home.

I am using Avast anti-virus (free). It is true that there is 1 gig. of RAM installed but the computer came off-the-shelf with 512 Mb and the same Graphics Card. If you feel pretty certain that insufficient memory is the problem, I guess I'll add memory but money is tight so I'll have to save up.

Let me know if anything else comes to mind in the meantime.
And thanks for your time and effort, I appreciate it very much.

Murf,
FYI. It was not that the machine was short on memory. It was (apparently) a driver conflict on my wireless adapter. I un-installed the software that came with my adapter and the problem went away. Just lucky.
