May or may not help but worth a shot. Download this FIRMWARE it's a zip file so extract. Once extracted double click on the *.exe file.

The drive worked OK in VISTA? Was this a clean install of Windows 7 or an upgrade from VISTA?

it worked perfectly fine in vista. vista is what the computer came with.

I took it to a computer repair man b/c it wouldn't boot up and he put a new hard drive in it and put windows 7 64 bit on it.

Since I got it back from him, I did have to find a driver for the touchpad for it to scroll up and down.

Then I noticed the cd rom drive didn't work either.

On the DELL site I noticed that the OPTIARC AD-5560A had issues with Roxio Creator. Have you tried this ONE

If so and you have Roxio Creator, I would uninstall it and see if the DVD comes back.

the firmware link says device isn't recognized.

uninstalled roxio and the cd drive still isn't there.

At this point, I think it's something the computer repairman did/didn't do.

Or I need a new cd rom drive.

I'm not sure if I need a new drive because it turns green and opens, so I think it's something the repairman forgot to connect or something.

I still have registry values for the cd rom, but when I open up system information, click components and then click cd rom, the other side that should have the cd rom information is empty.

Then, when I click components then storage and drives, the C drive is the only one listed.

If the drive door opens then it is getting power and is probably good. After you uninstalled Roxio did you reboot?

Right click on "My Computer" then to "Manage"

Left pane click on Disk Management

Does the DVD drive show up there, scroll down should have a drive letter assigned to it. in the right pane?

I'm at a loss. I don't know what's causing this. I have tried everything. I think it's something the computer man did.

He put a new hard drive in my laptop and changed vista to windows 7. He probably forgot something along the way.

CD drive still isn't there. Is there anything else that I haven't tried already?

Just my two cents here. If the CD drive wasn't working properly to start with the repairman wouldn't be able to install Windows 7 on the laptop.

well since I got it back from the repairman, I had to update the driver for my touchpad bc it wasn't working properly, and now my cd rom drive isn't recognized by the computer.

I've tried every solution I could find online and nothing has helped.

Is there a virus that can make cd drives disappear?
