Cool Win2K, SP4 - audio device not working

Hi all,

Client had win2K pro; sp3 installed. For some reason, his antivirus was asking for sp4.

Went to ms update website and installed sp4.

After everything, the sound card stopped working. No audio. While in control panel/sounds and clicking on Chord.wav; get the message "your sound card maybe in use."

Under device manager, CMedia AC97 is listed with "?" as well as MPU-401 compatible midi device.

Went to CMedia website downloaded drivers; still problems.

The drivers from the motherboard manufacturer also do not seem to work.

One thing is that everytime I try to install or update the drivers, get the message that the drivers are not digitally signed by ms and might not work.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi santhosh welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Download Everest and post (word-for-word) the make and model of the motherboard.

Also...

Start
Run...
type devmgmt.msc click OK

That opens up Device Manager and anything with an exclamation/question mark beside it is a driver error.

Hi Spider,

Cool tool. Impressed!!! Thanks for pointing it out.

Were you looking for the expanded mother board info. (incl. cpu info, bus info etc.) OR the plain vanilla one with just the motherboard and its manufacturer's info? I am posting the plain vanilla one over here; if more expanded one is required, let me know.

Thanks again.

S

Anyway, here's the info. requested :

More info is always better, you posted exactly what was needed.
Turns out the + sign after the GL was the deciding factor, there
were 2 GL motherboard versions.
.

Go here to ECS motherboard download site and get the

PCtel AMR/CNR Modem Driver for Support O.S Windows 2000 ; Windows XP

and the

SiS 7012 PCI Audio Driver for Support O.S Windows Me ; Windows 9x ; Windows 2000 ; Windows XP

and the

C-Media 9738 Codec Sound Driver for Support O.S Windows NT series ; Windows 2000 ; Windows XP

The modem driver is required because many times they are voice modems and
voice modems load audio drivers as well.

Thanks Spider. Will download the modem drivers and see if it works.

I would have never thought about the voice modem piece... yes the mobo has a modem on its pci slot.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Hi Spider,

Unfortunately, the steps recommended did not work. Uninstalled everything under sound and modem in device manager.

As there is a modem on PCI, I had to use the manufacturers cd to load the drivers back in. I guess they do not use the modem anymore, as they have broadband - but its still there.

Everytime I tried to load drivers from the ECS web site (you had pointed out); for Sis drivers, I would get the message "not recommended as they were incorrect drivers for the device." Guess that it doesnt like Sis 7012 drivers. Either way, went ahead and installed them, did not work.

The only drivers it is accepting is the Cmedia 9738 (uda035) and when it does ask for cmuda.dll, I have to use the one under cmedia ac97. However, the system does not complain if I load everything from cmedia ac97.

Well, I guess I have done everything by the book.

I am thinking that my next option is to buy a cheap sound card and swap it with the modem (as there are no more PCI slots left - one has ethernet card the other modem).

In anycase, I have pasted the entire report from the everest s/w right after this post - as the length of the post was exceeding the limit. Let me know if there is anything that I have missed.

Thanks,

Sam

So to verify, the C-Media file your downloading from ECS is uda035_w2kxp.zip ?

When i upgraded to sp4 i had the same problem, no sound, and even some video probs. I was using epox 8kda3+ mobo for athlon skt 754. Well, my solution was to uninstall the sound, video, and mobo drivers, THEN run the sp4 upgrade, then the mobo drivers, then sound and video.

Well, thanks all for helping. Unfortunately, could not uninstall sp4 as the remove/change button in add/remove program is grayed out. No sound.

Will end up buying soundblaster pci card from circuit city it seems.
