Cannot complete Windows Media Player 10 setup

This is driving me crazy! I have been prompted to re-install Windows Media Player 10 as my existing program would not play.

I downloaded the MP10 Setup file successfully but everytime I run the setup I get a message "Cannot complete Windows Media Player 10 Setup". "It was not possible to complete setup".

There is no stated reason why the setup fails. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix my problem and complete setup?

Hi thunderboom. Have a look in the setup log and see if any errors are mentioned. You will find it in your Windows folder (C:\windows\wmsetup10.log)

Post back any errors found if you need more help.

Make sure that you can view hidden files and folders, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.

Open the Windows Media Player folder and tell me if wmpns.jar is present. If so, rightclick on it, choose Properties and post back all the information in the General Tab please. Also click on the Security Tab (if you have XP Home, you will have to boot into Safe Mode to see this Tab) and tell me if you logon has Full Control. See here for help on how to boot into Safe Mode if you need it.

I have made the hidden files and folders viewable.

The file wmpns.jar is not present in the WMP folder.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall all versions of Sun Java/JRE (Sun Java Runtime Environment) and reboot. When you have done that, go here and download and install the latest version of Sun Java. That version of JRE is insecure and there are many parasites that exploit this version.

When you have done this, see if you can install WMP now. If not, have a look in the C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\applet folder and see if there is a copy of wmpns.jar there. If so, copy the file and paste it into your Windows Media Player and try installing WMP now.

I have done all you suggested. WMP will still not install. The wmpns.jar file is still missing in WMP and also not in Java.

OK, try this. Go here, download and install the MS patch and reboot.

It should install wmpns.jar to your C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\applet folder. If it does, copy the file across to the Media Player Folder (check to make sure it is not also installed there first though, reboot again and try installing WMP10 now.

Let us know if this helped.

I did as you suggested the wmpns.jar file is now in both folders but the WMP 10 will still not install. I copied the latest WMP log, its shown below:

[*WMC Logging begun at 2006/4/23 - 8:41:15. Logging at level: '5'. OS is NT. OSVer is 5.1.2600.0.2180. System Lang is 1033. Prev version system is 10.0.0.3646. Setup version 10.00.00.3646.]
WMC_CopyFile: File 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\applet\WMPNS.jar' is newer than the version to be installed. No copy will occur.
WMC_CopyFile: File 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmpns.dll' is newer than the version to be installed. No copy will occur.
Current command line: '/Shortcuts /RegExts'.

Please note I have also tried, on many occasions, to install Microsoft "Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB911565)". This also will not install.

Ok, lets see what is running on your PC thunderboom. perhaps I will be able to spot a problem.

Go here and download the latest version of Hijack This. Unzip it and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Also go here and download Silent Runners.vbs (use IE to download it) to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.
