This Device can not start (code 10)

Windows XP

Sony CRX330EE cdrw/dvd drive

I just bought a cdrw/dvd drive and it's showing up in my hardware list with an exclaimation mark next to it. Man, nothing like spending hard earned money on something I cant get to work that really gets my blood boiling... When I double click on it the message i get is "This Device can not start (code 10)." The disk drive does NOT show up under My Computer. Anybody with any advice would be greatly appreciated, because I am seconds away from giving it the grenade treatment.

thanks
Stin

What are the IDE configurations, is it on its own channel? Did you check the jumper situation?

its the primary device on the second channel, it is the only device on the channel, and the jumper is set to master.

As stated, it probably is the jumper configuration, but try something easier first.

Go back into Device Manager and right click on the drive. Choose uninstall. Now reboot.

If the rom is the only optical drive, then it should be jumpered to Master on IDE2, and connected on the end of the cable. The middle connector on the cable is for a slave drive.

Ok, forget XP for now. Have a look in the bios program to see what drives are detected there. Watch the screen as the computer boots. You should see something like "Press xx to enter setup (bios). It's usually the DEL key.

Once in there, poke around until you find a screen that lists the IDE devices. It will look something like this. Post back with that IDE list.

That's perfect grey scale.

You just confirmed that your bios detection is fine, the jumpers are fine, and the cd/dvd is fine.

Go into device manager and try to update the driver for the drive. If that doesn't work, stay in Device Manager and click Troubleshoot to start The Troubleshooting Wizard.

Yes, you'll need to address that. Are there any other devices in Device Manager that have a "!" or "?" beside them?

Attempt to update the bus controller's driver. Allow XP to search the internet if requested.

Failing that, download and run Everest from my below link. Post back with the "Chipset" information. Once I have that, I can find the drivers. Also, is that XP Home or Pro?
