Join the club. I'm resigned now to waiting for Symantec to come up with a patch to solve the problem. I now run LiveUpdate manually at least twice a day in case I miss anything.

Hello. I installed Norton 2007 about 2 weeks ago and I am having the same exact issue as eveyone else. Infact the way I found this forum is because I searched "Norton 2007 Memory Issue." I am also having a problem with CCAPP.exe hanging too on shutdown. Anyone else?

I'm seeing 3 symptoms. I believe they are the same that everybody else is seeing:
1. ccApp hanging at shutdown.
2. ccsvchst memory violation at shutdown.
3. ccsvchst memory leak.

I'm not too worried about (1) and (2). It's not clean, it shouldn't happen in a commercial product, but in the end only (3) is really hurting.

Yesterday's LiveUpdate installed something new that seems to help. It's too early to be sure, but CCSVCHST no longer seems to leak memory. After a day, its virtual memory size was at a modest 20 MB.

Hello Bernard,

Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.

I understand from your message that ccApp.exe file is not responding in Norton Antivirus (NAV) 2007.

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. Please note that this issue can occur due to corrupted Windows temporary files or if Norton Antivirus (NAV) feature try's to scan floppy drive for virus during shutdown. In order to resolve this issue, I suggest you please follow the steps provided below:

-- Start Norton Antivirus (NAV) 2007
-- Select Auto protect under "Settings"
-- Select configure
-- Under real-time Protection,Select General settings.
-- In the right pane, uncheck "Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down."
-- Click ok
-- Restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, this issue can occur due to the conflict in a particular registry value. In order to resolve this issue, I suggest you to change the value of a particular registry entry on your computer.

-- Backup the registry:

*CAUTION*: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Please see the document linked below for details on making a backup of your registry:

Title: Backing up the Windows registry
Document ID: 199762382617
> Web URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/support...rc=con_ols_nam

-- Change the value of a particular registry entry:

1. Click *Start* and then *Run*.
2. Type *REGEDIT* into the Run dialog box when it comes up and then click OK. The Registry Editor will open.
3. Navigate to and select the following key:

*HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop*

4. On the right pane, right click on "*AutoEndTasks*" and click on *Modify*.
5. Change the value to *1*.
6. Close Registry editor and restart the computer.

I also understand from your message that you are facing issues with ccsvchst

Please note that in order to resolve this issue, I suggest that you clean boot the system (to resolve all conflicts) and optimize your system resources (to make the resources work more efficiently) before installation:

A clean boot is a restart of Windows with no applications running and as few extra drivers loading as possible. Extra drivers come from any applications installed after the basic installation of Windows Operating System.

To perform clean boot of your system, follow the instructions in the document below:

Title: 'Links to clean boot documents'
Document ID: 2002040815531039
> Web URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support...rc=con_ols_nam

Please let us know if the issue is resolved and if we can be of any further assistance to you in using the Symantec product.

Thanks and Regards,

More from Symantec

Response (Vanitha) - 12/26/2006 01:24 AM
Greetings Bernard,

Welcome back to Symantec Online Technical Support.

Please note that to protect your computer, some Symantec files start with Windows. If another program starts a file at the same time, the files can conflict and cause problems with your Symantec program and may cause the error with ccsvchst.

In order to resolve such conflicts, I suggest you to start Windows with only Microsoft and Symantec programs and services running.

For detailed information to perform these troubleshooting steps please refer to the following document from our Online Knowledge Base that has instructions you need to follow:

Title: 'How to start your computer with only Symantec and Microsoft services loading'
Document ID: 2005110811012639

Please let us know if the issue is resolved and if we can be of any further assistance to you in using the Symantec product.

Thanks and Regards,

Can anyone please tell me the best way to stop Norton 2007 from starting up when I start my machine? Ever since I installed this program I have had nothing buy problems. ccApp.exe always hangs on shutdown Now recently when the ccApp.exe error occurs my whole machine freezes before the Windows shut down screen and I have to manually push my tower' power button.

I am going to go back to use AVG until they fix this, but don't know if there is a way to stop Norton. Thanks for any info.

ccSvcHst.exe Application Error at Windows XP shutdown

Hi Folks -

I just got off the phone from escalating this problem several levels at Symantec technical support. For my configuration, the solution was simple.

I have an IBM ThinkPad A31 running XP SP2 and I have NO FLOPPY DRIVE INSTALLED. The default installation for NIS 2007 is configured to scan floppy drive(s) on shutdown.

The fix:

Open NIS 20007, click the NIS tab, open Settings, click AutoProtect, click Configure, select General Settings.

Deselect (uncheck) Scan Floppy Drive at Shutdown, click Apply and exit.

My machine now performs a clean shutdown with no ccSvcHst.exe error msg.

Cheers, Hans

Hi All and thank you for the detailed discussion of the Symantec error-proliferation program aka Norton Internet Security 2006 or 2007. I am running 2006 on 3 machines, an HP desktop, HP laptop (both 1 yr old), and an ancient Micron desktop (6 yrs old). All have XP, the old one is XP Pro. I applied the short fix to each of my three machines and now have 2 out of 3 running beautifully. I am running SystemWorks on the newer 2 machines and found that with the aforementioned quick fix (unchecking the "scan floppy disk drive for infected boot disk" option) that the Norton system optimizer actually does a pretty good job! I thought it was garbage for the past few months because of the other issues... Thanks to all for your informed posts and easy to follow instruction with clear references.

Best of luck!
Funman

No one has mentioned a system crash following the above error messages. I've had to re-install XP Home 3 times in the past 3 months (today being the 3rd time). The only common denominator I get is that it is generally preceeded by the ccScvHst.exe error message occurring for a few days leading up to crash when shutting down.

I installed Norton System Works 2006 and Norton Internet Security 2007 three months ago.....quite a coincidence!

Any more news on this problem yet?

Sorry - my experience is with XP Professional and Windows 2000 Professional...
I don't use the "home" products. Good luck, Hans

Turned off Automatic Live Update.

The error message "The instruction at 0x69532047 reference memory at 0x00000 could not be read." disappeared when I turned off Automatic Live Update in Norton Antivirus 2007. I'll get the updates manually.

Peter, I have been getting updates manually sometimes twice a day for some time now so I took your advice and disabled "auto update."
I also disabled "Scan floppy drive at shutdown" per hmentha above.
I thought the problem was solved when the computer shut down without any error messages but unfortunately the next time I shut down there it was again.

I then modified the value of "AutoEndTasks" in the Registry from "0" to "1" as described in the post by bbrafman above.

I have now been able to shut down four times without incident. I intend to leave these three modifications in place and will let you know if this solution is permanent or just a temporary fluke after a day or two.

Thank you Deilsawa. You are right the problem returned on subsequent re-boots. So I disabled "Scan floppy drive at shutdown", re-enabled Automatic Live Updates, and have been able to shut down four times in a row without the error message re-appearing.
