Odd network problems

I had a small (2 PC) windows network setup. It was working fine with; a wireless TiVo access point, a laptop with both a working wired/wireless connection and a desktop with which I occasionally used a proxy server (TOR) for internet browsing.

I got a used computer and decided to go with a Linux/Ubuntu OS. Reformatted the HD and did a complete install of the Dapper Drake version and everything appeared fine. I hooked it up to the same router as the windows network and it worked fine and was able to browse the net. A few days passed.

I tried to log onto the net with the windows desktop and was unable to pull up any web page. I tried it on the windows laptop, same result. The Linux PC was able to access the net no problem. Did some investigating and found the two windows machines could still successfully transfer files between each other. The desktop is unable to open the MSHOME workgroup, while the laptop is, and it shows up as the only computer in the group. Odder still, I was able to connect the Tivo to the internet and still get program updates where its software is running on the windows desktop.

The really odd thing is when I turn on the TOR proxy application Firefox allows me to browse the web. I briefly turned off my windows firewall to see if it had a conflict there, and found nothing. The next day all three computers were able to browse the net. Today I again have the same problem with the two windows PCs.

So, the Linux computer is still able to browse the internet all the time, with the windows PCs having sporadic access issues.

I have no idea what is causing this problem, any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Uninstall the Network Adapter in Device Manager and restart.

This fixed the problem, consider yourself my hero!

If this re-occurs does this mean that I might have a physical problem with the network adapter itself, or something else entirely?

It means what you already know if you're using Linux...Microsoft sucks. I see this all the time and with more than just the Network Adapter. The Display Adapter, the optical drives, 1394 controllers...
