Excel Formula needed

Here's an easy one for you Excel pros out there.

Cell A2 reflects a date. I need cell A1 to automatically reflect a date 1 week earlier than cell A1.

thanks!

Unless I'm missing something, its fairly simple IF cell A2 is a valid date and not text.

Anyway.

Cell A2 is 05/27/03 formatted to May 27, 2003

Cell A1 is "=A2-7" without the quote marks and is formatted will show as May 20, 2003

Of course the date can be formatted to any date format you like.

It is indeed text. Is there any way to get Excel to return the expected date when the cell being queried is a text format?

Thanks again for your help. If there isn't a solution, then I'll just have to change format of all cells. Don't want to do that if there is another way around this.

CLARIFICATION:

The cells format is date/time, but returns "May 27, 2003"

thanks,

I got it to work. Not sure why it didn't work the first time, but the =A1-7 worked when cell A1 displayed text. thanks for your help!

Not quite sure I followed that, but the main thing is that IT WORKED. Now, you next assignment is to figure out why and how it worked, then you'll know how to repeat it.
