My specs:
Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz Memory: 1024MB RAM Hard Drive: 260 GB Video Card: Radeon X1050 Series (Omega 3.8.442) Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio Speakers/Headphones: Labtech Keyboard: USB Root Hub Mouse: USB Root Hub Mouse Surface: Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp.080413-2111) Motherboard: ASUS A7V8X-LA Computer Case: Power Supply Max Voltage: 250Watts Basicly, what has been happening as of late, my PC will shut off. My monitor is going black, but the power will stay on. I have to turn the PC Off manually, and try again. I thought it might have been an over heating problem, I opened up my CPU cleaned it all out, even the heat sink(I looked up on how to do that so I did it carefully) after that my CPU temp went down 12 degrees. I thought it was doing great! Then, it flcked off again. The LED light on the CPU will remain on, the LED lights of my CD rom drives will flash, and the hard drive loading light will stay yellow and not blink. Monitor goes black and light goes from green to orange. Sometimes the PC will last for like 2-3 hours or longer before going out. Also, it even does this on boot up, it will shut off even before getting passed the "Windows XP Home Edition Windows XP recovery console" options. Sometimes when I start it up, I get this too. Award BootBlock BIOS v1.0 BIOS ROM checksum error Detecting floppy drive A media... I have done a virus check, i have no viruses as my stuff is up to date... Any idea what my problem is? I think it might be my power supply but I have no idea. here are some shots on inside my PC, take note there is a spot on my Power supply that looks odd..looks like a brown spot? what is that? Not sure what you guys can make of these but maybe it can help? http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...werSupply1.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...werSupply2.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...therBoard1.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...therBoard2.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...therBoard3.jpg Here is the Speed Fan info, though I don't know what temp 1 and temp 2 is.. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...eedFanInfo.png I Just recently found out that the temp 1 and temp 2 is infact my motherboard! what's going on! Why is it so high!? I just opened up a case and put a fan on the outside blowing in, and here are my temps now. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...nblowingin.png http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...Newreading.png Latest speed fan reading. Appears no one around. Both of your readings indicate the following which could be the problem.
+12v =11v The 12 volt side at idle should have a varience of + or - 5% which equates to 11.40 and up yours is 11v. This indicates the power supply is possibly failing. Rerun speedfan but this time have several programs open (if you can keep it up that long) see if that voltage drops below 11. That brown spot is it a "TAG" can't tell. Also check each capacitor (little black/green ones), are any of the tops bulging? Look around the bottom of them see any foreign sustance? Leaking ones This would indicate a motherboard problem. |

Well the capacitors are actually fine, no leakage. My brother mentioned this to me over the phone before, they are all smooth.
No buldging. and no the brown spot is not a tag, it's actually on top of the opening of the power supply, it looked like a burn mark. I am on my pc as I am typing this, it's been on for a good 3 hours now.. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...ewReading2.png New reading it seem it's at 10v crap, looks like i didn't capture the 10v on that one. But It did drop to 10. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...ewreading3.png Here it is, it reads at 10.94V Last edited by DarkShadowRage; July 14th, 2008 at 05:31 PM. |

Sure enough, not to long ago just now the PC just shut off again.
it was on for a good 5 hours this time. So My power supply is going out? What's a good one to get? And how will I know what type of pin connectors i'll need? And will this fix my problem by replacing the power supply? Last edited by DarkShadowRage; July 14th, 2008 at 06:31 PM. |

Take the power supply out, only 4 screws holding in in on the back. Make sure that brown spot is in fact a burnt mark, if it is yes it is time to get a new one. Stay away from the cheap $20 ones, you wil be replacing it again.
The problem you may have is it may be a propriety power supply. Take the model number off of the existing power supply and post then we can find a suitable replacement for you. |

http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...upplyMark2.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...rdBirdsEye.jpg New shots, and this is the model number it said on it. HP-D2537F3R the PC keeps going out now, I can't even turn it on without it clicking off and the screen going black, is my PSU dying now? My speed fan just did 4 green checkmarks for the first time, then shot back up again, take a look at the voltage. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...ing4Greens.png http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...LowVoltage.png 10.88Volts! Your processor fan is really fluctuating from 865 rpm to over 2100 rpm but I see you have automatic fan speed checked.
As you can see it is a tight fit. That power supply has the following connectors: 1 x 20 Pin 1 x 4Pin 4 x 4Pin(CD/HDD) 2 x Floppy And is 5.9"(W)x3.4"(H)x5.5"(D) So you need to find one with those dimensions. Now you can find an exact replacement for $30 example: http://store.eboxdirect.com/250waatxposu.html However, I would replace with a little more powerful one. Here is a 300W one for $39.99 Here is a 480W for $20 This one should fit COOLMAX I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS ONE Also you really need to remove and check that brown spot to see if it is also burnt inside, then you know its shot. |

Thank you for your help and recommendations! But I must say something, when we opend the power supply up before, there was some yellow like stuff stringed across some of the things...is that supposed to be there?
It was stringed across the capacitors and such, i wasnt sure if that was actually a leak because it was also on the chipset. I will take a picture of it and show you! be back in a few min Last edited by DarkShadowRage; July 14th, 2008 at 11:35 PM. |

I'm not an electrician but that appears to be a capacitor leaking, most use glue guns but that material is generally clear. It appears you got a leak and you need to replace it. Maybe someone will come along that knows electrical. I will querry a couple of mods.

I see, I had a feeling that was what was wrong.
So, once I replace it my temps should be back to normal right? |

oh! another question, sometimes my monitor flickers on and off and my screen is all glitched up, and it looks blurry with lines all over it, is this a sign my video card is going out as well?

Yep you need a new power supply, should solve your problem.
Fluctuating power supply can cause all sorts of problems and looking at that leakage it could short and catch on fire. I would replace as soon as possible. Your video problem may be unrelated but I'm betting the power is the cause. Pretty easy to replace. |
