Can't shut down..

Computer won't shut down.. it'll either lock up on the desktop or it'll goto the shut down screen, but will never shut down.

Any suggestions?! Otherwise my system seems to be running fine.

What would you like me to paste here?!

Second question, maybe it's related to the above:

Here is one of the messages in my errorlog that I get daily:

Monday, June 09, 2003 DCOM Unable to start a DCOM Server: {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F 875C541}. The error: "%2" Happened while starting this command: -Embedding

How do I clear the errorlog of old errors and how might I fix the above?!

Alright, yupdate on the situation.. it did lock up as stated above a few times as the desktop and I couldn't do anything besides reset, but it appears that the computer just shuts down REALLLLLY slow. I waited this time and it shut down.

Any ideas?!

Push ctrl/alt/delete and see what you have running in the background. Take a look at Applications and Processes.

Sounds like you are having a program conflict and it is not properly shutting down. Which takes windows longer to shutdown.

Try going into Msconfig and disable everything in there just for a test. Check your system out and see if it is still hanging.

BIOS?

hi yuppicide,
Regarding your 1st problem, I think you might need to flash your motherboard BIOS. I had this problem with my gigabyte motherboard. I flashed & re-install XP, everything working fine.

@dodge: I don't run anything in my background and my my startup in msconfig has nothing on startup... as well as I've disabled the non MS services.

@stranger: My system used to shut down fine. I have the latest BIOS and have had it since I first put the system together. It's one of the first things I did.

Just happened again.. locked up on the desktop when I went to shut down. I went to START, Turn Off Computer, then Turn Off and it just sat there. The mouse was movable, but nothing was clickable then the mouse stopped working also.

I will check that link out. Why would an Intellimouse have a problem?! I have a Logitech MX series, but was just wondering about the Intellimouse for reference.

While searching, I came across a few references to freezing/shutdown prob's with Intellimouse.

Suffered the same problem when I first got it (Trackball). Reason being, I reckon, was I installed the drivers off the CD that came with it.
So I uninstalled it then re-installed it, letting Windows just pick it up. No problems since.

Heh.. back when I had an Intellimouse I never even used the driver disc. I just plugged it in and it worked. I had one when they first came out, but the Logitech is so much better. The MX series is higher resolution and much more responsive. I'll never go back to a normal optical. Logitech used to make a dual optical mouse with two scanners on the bottom, but this is just as good if not better.

Yeah, Logitech has a much better shape for my (anyone's?) hand.
There's a saying "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" and seeing as the wife is now looking over my shoulder I'd like to say it's one of the nicest presents I had for my last birthday.

Hahahaha that's hilarious the whole wife thing. I don't have a girlfriend or a wife, but one time my friends girlfriend bought him a new DVD player for Christmas. I was so mad she got such crap. It won't play VCD's or anything burned off the net. I have a DVD-R player and it won't even play them.
