Sound Device Problem

Hi there

I am having a problem with sound but I don't think it's a problem with the sound card. I've had other people try and help me to no avail so this is my last hope (not to sound too dramatic lol). I know very little about computers, I'm good application wise but hardware just doesnt "compute" in my head.

Originally I had and on-board C-Media AC97 Audio Device and after I recently formatted my computer I had to re-download the driver via Device Manager in the Control Panel. Even though it said that the device is working properly, and even when I attempt to listen to music the "audio bars" move up and down showing that it's playing except that no sound is coming out. I tried using a different set of speakers as well as a pair of headphones and still nothing. So I spoke to someone at a computer fair about it and bought a CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device and installed the drivers on the CD, but the same thing still happens, and once again I have tried it with different speakers and headphones. I used the speakers in my Dad's computer and they work fine so it's not a problem with the speakers.

Any help with this would be much appreciated as I'm practically going insane without sound on my PC. Hopefully I've explained it clearly enough, if you need to know anything else just ask.

As required here are the stats about my computer, however I have absolutely no idea what most of it means lol.
