Unhappy Pleeeeeeese Help! Arthritic pc!

I tried the info in the sticky about slow computers, but nothing has worked so far.

My pc is so sloooow that it has become more of a burden than a help to try to use it.

Hangs, not responding errors, mouse slow and hangs, memory too low msgs, pages load and close slow, scrolling slow, typing slow, MS Word slow, everything is just slow, slow, slow!

I have not installed any new programs or drivers.

I have not made any new system changes.

I have tried disk cleanup; defrag; spybot; cleanup IE; removing unused programs; unchecking unnecessary startup items in msconfig; reboot in safe mode, but didn't know what to do afterwards.

specs: XP home edition, 2002, SP 3; HD 69.9 GB capacity w/48 GB free; Intel Celeron CPU 2.4 GHz; 512 RAM; AVAST antivirus; IE 7.

It is sooooooo frustrating!

Hi K McK. It might help if I can see what is running on your computer. Go here and download DDS to your Desktop and doubleclick on DDs.scr to run it. If your security software includes script blocking features, please disable these before you run this utility. When the scan has finished, DDS.txt will open. You will also be asked if you want to perform the Optional scan. Click Yes and save both reports to your Desktop. Copy and paste both reports in this topic. The logs will be reasonably large so you may have to divide them into sections and make several posts to post them.

Script Blocking--I checked IE Advanced tab and found that that script enabling is unchecked. I do not know where else to look for script blocking features. I did check AVAST under program settings but did not see anything. I also used MS Help to try to find where else to look but with no luck.

I have downloaded it to my desktop, but I have not tried to run it yet because I was unsure about the script blocking.

There are several errors in your Event log that should be fixed after downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package.

Reboot afterwards and let me know if this made any difference.

okay, so far, so good. The mouse is working. Type is showing up when I hit the keys. MS Word opened with no problem. Web pages are opening and closing faster. Thanks so much! I think that it is time that I check out the subscription link. This experience has definitely been worth it! Thanks again!

Correction: The mouse is still functioning properly, but the web pages have slowed back down again to a creeping crawl. Could it be a virus of some kind? How do I do a safe mode virus scan?

There is no evidence of any malware in your log so if you have spoken to your ISP and they have confirmed the problem is not at their end, I would think the problem is caused by a program running at startup.

What browser do you use?

My browser is IE 7.
I will contact my ISP again.
I have looked at all of the startup programs in msconfig, and the ones that are checked appear legitimate. I use answersthatwork.com when I am unsure of a program. The checked programs are:

smax4pnp
intelMEM
DVDLauncher
ISUSPM
dltbmgr
igfxpers
CitiVAN
ashDisp
fssui
dsca
sprtcmd
Reader_sl
ctfmon
TeaTimer
CTDetect
sprtcmd (not sure why that is on there twice)
DSAgnt

Close IE and go to Start > Run and type:

iexplore.exe -extoff

and ok. IE will open with a message saying that IE is running without add-ons. Click on your Home Page and try the surfing now. Is it still slow?
