Question Computer Crash Copying Large Files from external

Hi All

PC: Dell Studio 1537
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
ATI Radeon HD3450
Samsung HM500Li HDD
4GB DDR2 Ram etc etc

When attempting to copy large files (eg HD movie or even copying many files at once) the computer will completely freeze and lock up. Mouse / Keyboard dont respond and screen just freezes.

Sometimes the copying will last for a few seconds, other times it just crashes as soon as the copying window appears.

I can copy smaller less consuming files OK and can also copy from one drive to another within the PC OK.

I could run a HD movie from off the external however both times ive tried it crashes around half an hour into it. Same freeze.

Ive tried different externals so im confident thats not the problem.

At first i suspected a harware fault, however i tried booting in safe mode and i was able to copy the files no problem. So im thinking its a software / driver issue but im unsure where to start? Everything in the device manager seems ok. I have run the memory diagnostic tool and it passed everything.

I running dual boot vista home premium and windows 7. Problem occurs on both.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Shane

Hi Shane, try clean boot troubleshooting to see if you can isolate the problem. See here for more information.
