No sound on windows start up/shut down...

I am experiencing a strange thing with my sound. No sound on windows start up or shut down or on Youtube. But, when Skype opens up or I play a wmv. file that someone has sent me in email, I have sound. Also have sound when saved mp3 files from desktop are played. No sound when logged into a conference call on DimDim either. I also noticed that a few of my USB ports are intermittantly working. All this started when I moved the computer but nothing is loose inside. Thanks in advance for any help!! Z

Not quite sure on all that right off ziggy57. YouTube is heavily Flash Player activity, and I see on the DimDim site:

Quote:
Dimdim streams the audio via a Flash movie
Only tie-in I see in what you have posted so far. As for the Windows sounds, look in Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Sounds tab, and make sure the Windows items have associated sounds selected, or there isn't a Sound Scheme that is non-functional there. Check to make sure under the Audio tab that all those have associated devices showing.

For Flash Player, go here and download and run the actual Flash Player uninstaller for Windows. Reboot, then go here and download and install the latest version of that.

Reboot to seal the deal, then check for improvements and post back an update please.

hey Jintan thanks for the response. I have done as you suggested and have no change to report back. I'm at a complete loss what to do next. Is it possible that itunes could be causing a conflict? I have researched and asked about everyone I know regarding this odd situation and am getting nowhere. Could it be a sound card issue? I really doubt it since the sound work on everything but windows and youtube. The dimdim thing is strange too. I'm open to more suggestions.

Thanks, ziggy57

To check user settings, is this a problem for all user accounts there? If there are no others why not create one (Control Panel - User Accounts), reboot, log in as that other user and check.

Hi Tom,

Sorry for the delay in getting back...traveling. Anyway, I tried as you suggested and all user accounts are affected the same way...no sound. Have any others suggestions?

John

A head scratcher for sure. Let's check in relation to no sound, and USB issues, both occurring around the same time. Let's check conflict-type info for now.

Code:
@ECHO OFF
cd\
start /wait msinfo32.exe /report Components1.txt /categories componentsproblemdevices+resourcesconflicts+resourcesforcedhardware&& notepad Components1.txt && exit
Open Notepad (Start - Run, type notepad and press Enter).

Copy/paste the above text (inside the code box) into the open text box, then save this to your desktop as "conf1.bat"

Be sure to include the "" quotes in the name. Then click on conf1.bat. When the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents back here please. The log will also be saved as C:\Components1.txt.

Hi Ziggy,

I've found out that MS did an update that provided the wrong driver, if you go to media drivers C media AC97 and roll back to previous driver it will work again. After you do that ignore all update driver prompts. Keep away from the prompt.
