Help with alternative E-Commerce software

Lately I've been helping some friends and family with building some sites and promotions. I was recently asked to help create an online marketplace for a friend, this is where it gets tricky.

I've worked with some e-commerce software before xcart, zencart. While Youtube boasting about Volusion and many more.

With all of these options available I am not too sure about what is best to work with anymore.

What I would like to know is:

In your opinion (or others) what is the best e-comm software available today, and what are some other high quality alternatives? (if possible please list some Pros and Cons).

I greatly appreciate everyone's opinion and time!

I looked into Ashop Commerce, looks alright. However its always better to hear a successful implementation. Thanks!
