Attempted hack macro or crawlers?

Hi All,

We recently had an incident where 1500 queries were sent to our website in a matter of minutes causing our site to crash as there were too many connections to the sql database.

The ip address in question is registered to an ISP and we were unable to get an individual IP address. I have sent an email out to the ISP abuse department but doubt i will get much of a response.

Is there any software i can place on the servers that will limit the amount of connections an ISP can make to the servers in a set amount of time.
