95 Error Message

I don't suppose anyone will see this but I'll give it a go.
I have an old computer on which I have just installed Windows 95
I've no idea if it is a or b edition as I only have the cd left.
It is 100% legal.
When I restart after install it comes up with an error message.

"While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer"

I've restarted in "normal" "safe" & "step by step" but it always comes back with the same error.
Can anyone explain what the error is and how to overcome it so I can finish booting.
Thank You.

Try the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, Error Message: Initializing Device IOS Windows Protection Error.

I Googled, "while initializing device ios windows 95" and got 1,390 results. If the MS article doesn't help, try some of those other resources.

Ok, I'm really getting nowhere as half the options in the solutions don't seem to be there for me.
This is an old Shuttle with a Maxtor Diamonmax Plus8 drive of 40GB
AMD Semperon 2600, Ram is KVR266x64C25/256 soI think that is 256 MB of PC266

I've fdisk'ed my drive and formatted it. I really can't remember the sequence next.
Do I install Dos, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 first or can I go straight to 95.
My disks are all legal (I keep everything) How do I know if I have version "a" or "B"
there is nothing on the disk to tell me.
Does it matter which boot disk I use ?

Solved

Ok
All I wanted to do was play some old games "wolfenstein, Spear of Destiny" etc. where it all began for me.
In desperation I thought I'd try Windows 98 as I could'nt get 95 installed .
Viola!! all the very first games I bought play on 98, and they really are'nt so bad today. Ahhhh Nostalgia.
Case closed.
