HDD Cable Select..?

I was trying to install my old HDD as a slave. It wasnt working. Whenever I boot up I get something along the lines of "Drive 1 not found, Secondary drive failure" something like that. Someone told me to check the jumper settings of the main HDD.Okay, I couldnt get the main hard drive out of its case, so I looked through a vent/grid thing and found the makers website. This is what it said:
Quote:
Note: Designation of a drive as either master or slave is generally determined by jumper configuration, not by the order in which it is daisy-chained to the other drive. The only exception is if the drive is jumpered "cable select", and both the system and ribbon cable support cable select. In this case, master and slave is determined by the position on the data ribbon cable. Depending how the system controls the cable select line on the ribbon cable determines where the master and slave need to be attached. Refer to your system manual for more information.
I looked at the jumper settings and they are on cable select. Explain this further for me please?

Hi,
Your ribbon cable has two 3 connections.
1 - motherboard
2 - slave
3 - master

When you choose cable select then the drive on the end of the cable (3) will be set as Master.
Drive connected to the middle connect (2) will be set as Slave

HDD's have different setups.
Some may need to be set as Master + Slave to work with a Slave disk attached.
Some are happy to just be set as Master or Cable Select.

I would suggest to try to remove the drive. Check both sides incase it is securely screwed into the case.

After awhile of it not working, I finally realized I should have the old HDD set as cable select too. So I did that and it WORKED! Tada! Well, after that I shut it down and restart and stuff.. and now I'm getting the same message about the failures and not being found. And it isnt detecting the hardware. When I first set it as cable select, then rebooted, it detected it. I had access to it through my computer. For some reason I rebooted and it doesnt work anymore. And my CD RW wont work..

So you are saying that the BIOS is no longer detecting the drives?

Again, I would suggest if you remove both drives and check the jumper settings and set one as Master and the other as slave.

You should be able to get detailed information on the jumper settings from the HDD manufacturers website.

There is a sticker on my old HDD that has the jumper settings. I used those and set it as slave. I tried every which way it said, and I went to my new HDD manufacturer's website and got the jumper setting for master (before this) and set it to master. I got this message:
Quote:
Primary Drive 0 not found
Primary Drive 1 not found
I just hit F1 to start anyways, and it started loading as if it were my old computer, even though I set it as slave.. I'm very confused. I disconnected the old HDD and set the other HDD as master to come back here and seek help. I still got the message above, but hit F1.

Hi,

The problem is that some drives need different settings if they are Master (No Slave) and Master + Slave.

I still think you will have to remove the new drive and double check the jumper settings.
