Re: Compaq Deskpro XL 5133 (66)
undefinedundefined
My friend (ex-mate) brought his computer over, because he thinks I can fix it. Well first of all, he got it from someone who redid some things to it. I can't get online with it because it doesn't have an ISP. I plan to use NetZero for updating after 12am. Okay so, he has a 999MB harddrive, he has a CDrom drive, and 14.4 floppy. He plans on using it primarily for when his grandchildren come over, and to practice his typing. However, he would like to access his email. I told him I would search around and see how much his PC could be updated, without too much expense. He has a modem that has reached 19200. He needs to know what all can be upgraded on the original motherboard of the Compaq Deskpro XL 5133 (66). His monitor is a 151FS, 14" viewable. So far all he has to buy is a new mouse, and speakers, but if he wanted to add more RAM, and a larger harddrive is what I need information about. I kinda know what I'm doing but I need advice, etc... |

i have two compaqs here and I wouldn't do too much to upgrade them. If all he wants to do is type and check email. You don't need any blinding speeds to check email and certainly no more than 999mb hd. I'm trying figure out that size. I have a dell with a 2.5g and that 2500mb. There's 1000mgs to one gig, so that hd wouldn't even be one gig, are you sure that is right? My compaq 4660 has a 4.3 and the 5190 has a 15gig, your model falls between there. It probably has 64mgs of ram. To speed it up, he should add more ram and that's a 28kbs modem, you could upgrade to a 56k. Both my compaqs have the 28kbs modems...and they do pretty well. The problem with the older model compaqs is that they are not all that upgradeable

for kids the computer may not be much. It is too old for most newer games. The max ram it can have is 192 megs. You will be limited as to the harddrive maximum size. Something to think about, as the pervious message stated, it will be okay for general usage, emails, word processing, etc but you will have resource problems if you try playing music in the background, video, etc.
IMO, anything you purchase for it will be a waste because you could be spending more that what the computer is worth. If you have the money for a larger harddrive, more ram, speakers, etc, then maybe you could pick up a good new computer by adding a few more dollars. |

Thanx, I kind of thought that and had mentioned to him. Yeah... it's less than a 1GB HD. It's running as fast as my Packard Bell with the Cyrix 300mhz. His has Excel, Powerpoint, Access and the Deluxe CD Player, Microsoft Exchange, Outlook, Office, and a few more. So he's in excellent shape for a first PC. I am going to pass this information on to him tomorrow. (I need to make Cybertechhelp my Homepage
