Turning 40 anyone??
For his book "Forty: The Age and the Symbol", academic Stanley Brandes scoured history for references to this all-important number, and concluded that the shiver that turning 40 causes us today is part of a legacy that traces to the ancient Jews, Babylonians and Turks. The metaphorical power of 40 has been passed along through Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions to the present Western world.
In many languages, 40 has been used as a general term to mean "a lot," says Brandes. In English, for example: An agitated person can be said to "have 40 fits." The British used to call the centipede a "40-legs." An 18th-century Brit might say, "I wouldn't be caught dead in a 40-acre field with him." A deceitful person can be called a "40-faced liar" or a "40-faced flirt." A "40-jawed talker" is an old English term for a chatterbox. A few decades ago, a strong team of horses might "pull like 40." A hundred years ago, something of great worth might be said to "weigh 40." In 19th-century America, strong rum and whiskey were labeled "40-rod." Middle Eastern and Western European languages, too, use 40 to mean “an awful lot." Biblical references to the number 40 are innumerable: the flood of 40 days and 40 nights; reigns of 40 years; punishments of 40 lashes; payments of 40 pieces of silver. And how many thieves did Ali Baba have? I don't Know the answer to the last dang question???  I'm over 40.   ------------------ When I'm done... You'll know it!!
