Wink Upgrading EDO ram need help!

Hi this message somewhat relates to the one I posted in Win ME section.

So I want to create a crossover wireless network between my 2 computers (thanks z1p), an older one and a newer one. The wireless card I'm aiming for has a minimum requirement of 100 mhz, with at least 64 mb ram. The ram is the problem for the old one, it runs on 2 x 16 mb EDO type. I got the idea from some places that they no longer sell EDO ram, nor is it produced anymore.

I need to know whether I can use SD ram on it or not, and I don't know how to figure out whether I could from my motherboard. I was told that you can't even fit sd ram in there because the pin number's different or something. but I got 128 mb rd ram, and they computer started up fine and recognized it, but windows wouldn't start. I also need to know (the computer has 4 slots) if I can use a different amount per piece (say a 32 mb piece, and 2 x 16 mb) or something, or combinations I can have. And where I could get EDO ram from anywhere???

Thanks!

You will need to identify the motherboard to determine quanity and type of memory. You cannot mix EDO and non-EDO memory.

EDO memory is plentifull.

Reboot the computer in question and hit the PAUSE KEY when the ist screen come up. Write down the letters and numbers at the bottom of the screen, that is your BIOS ID. From this you can possible find the motherboard manufacture.

If it is an AWARD BIOS go HERE-AWARD

If it is AMI BIOS go HERE -AMI BIOS

Once you can find the motherboard manufacture, go to there web site and see if you can find the specifications of the motherboard. If not post it here, maybe we can find it.

OR

Go HERE download and run may give you the manufacture.

Thanks for the quick response

The top line says :

Award Modular BIOS v.4.51PG

and the last line is this:

08/19/97/580VPX-SMC669-2A5L/CDV3BC-00

sorry i can't read my own writing the underlined part is either c or l

I'm guessing it's an award bios (well duh?)

but I have NO CLUE how to read whatever's on that site, sorry

It's an "L"

Those tell us this:

08/19/97 Date of BIOS
580VPX SMC669 CHIPSET
2A5LDV3BC-00Motherboard

You have a VIA chipset and a Socket AM 535+ motherboard made by several manufactures.

VTech/PcPartner VIB804DSE or Digimate T5DX-VPX2E; Eagle VPX-200B

I think I found your motherboard.

Go HERE and download the file:

VIB804DS VT82C585VPX + VT82C586A Baby AT AWARD 35-8804-XX 80619 All Ver. [By clicking on ALL VER] this will download a PDF file. If that is your board it will tell you memory configuration.

The table 1 and table 2 shows the possible memory combinations. The motherboard will support Fast Page Mode (FPM), Extended Data Output (EDO), Burst Extended Data Output (BEDO) and Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) DIMMs.

Sorry I found the invoice now

It says the motherboard is a VX Pro 512 P/L Cache (I have no idea what that means) and the RAM is 16Mb EDO Simm (32 mb).

Now that's really odd, because I purchased a "Kingston 128 MB 133MHz SDRAM Memory" and it didn't work. I guess I'm not understanding something about RAM, sorry.
I'm not sure what the difference is between DIMM and SIMM is.

Hmm I see...thanks shodan

However I'm still not sure why the sdram didn't work. The computer could start up and the first screen displayed the correct amount of ram (referring back to the "Kingston 128 MB 133MHz SDRAM Memory"). I'm not completely sure, but I suspect that it's because the chart says that the DIMM configurations on murf's link don't show 64mb (sdram) and 64 mb (sdram)? Could someone tell me if that's the problem?

If so, I'm not sure where to get EDO or BEDO ram anywhere. Anyone got any clues?

Thanks

Anthony
