Laptop freezing

Hello. I have an Acer Aspire 5732Z laptop that keeps freezing after about 20 minutes or so of use. It will stay frozen for about 5 to 10 minutes, then will work again, although very sluggishly. I can shut down, and turn back on, and the process repeats.

I'm not sure if this is a Windows problem, a hardware issue, or a virus problem.

What I have tried so far is:

- Complete restore to a week ago when things were working fine. (I do not recall installing anything deliberately that would have caused this.)

- Ran chkdsk and selected option to repair bad sectors. None found.

- Defragged computer (it analyzed at 19% defragmentation before, now it is at 0%)

- Ran full Malwarebytes scan. No infected files found.

- Ran the troubleshooter and disabled some startup programs.

Thank you for any assistance. It is much appreciated.

Forgot to add that last week, Microsoft did an update and the following was updated at that time...perhaps something here is causing a problem? I also ran updates to Avast and Malwarebytes before running the scans, so those updated too. This is all that is showing as having been installed under "Programs" in the last couple of weeks:

Adobe Reader X (10.1.1)
avast! Free Antivirus
Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver
Malwarebyte Anti-Malware Version
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007
Microsoft Silverlight
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161
Microsoft Works

No, it does not feel hotter than normal, and it has always sat on an elevated laptop platform thing. It does sound like the fan is spinning...but it may be that when the computer freezes, I don't hear any fan noise at all for that time (5 minutes or so) then it sounds like the fan kicks in again, and the computer unfreezes.

Thank you for your help.

* I should say, I hear 'something' in the upper left of the laptop...I assume that's the fan? Quiet whirring most of the time, then when it freezes...nothing for about 5 minutes, then it starts back with the quiet whirring as the freeze lessens, or goes away all together. Sometimes when it starts back up, it's so sluggish I restart the laptop, and then this cycle repeats.

Hm, not a good development, I think...

I pressed F2 on startup, and there is this:
SATA Port0 Disk Status: Froze

I checked again a short while later, and it said clear, but now it is back to Froze. I think that is my hard drive, right?

I did buy the extended warranty for this laptop...maybe it's time to file a claim.
