Intel is courting gamers with its new upcoming chips. But Advanced Micro Devices plans to hang on to the core PC gaming crowd with some new products it is launching today. The company is a new high-end gaming chip, the Athlon 64 FX-62, which operates at 2.8 gigahertz and sells at a price of $1,031. The new chip is a step up from the 2.6-gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 model that the Sunnyvale chip maker launched in January.
On top of that, AMD is launching a new socket that supports faster DDR2 memory and AMD's version of virtualization technology, which allows someone to run more than one operating system on the same machine. The new socket is available with a variety of AMD's existing chips.
AMD is also introducing the Athlon 64 X2 5000+, a 2.6-gigahertz part which is available for $696, and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ for $328. Among the dozens of computer makers launching computers with the chips are: Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, and Lenovo.
