ATI Speeds Vista Graphics

ATI Technologies introduced new 64-bit graphics drivers for speeding up the performance of the beta 1 release of Microsoft's long-awaited Windows Vista operating system, on Thursday, only a day after Microsoft released the beta software to 10,000 testers. With its new Catalyst drivers, the Canadian company is one of the first graphics card makers to provide a 64-bit driver that supports Microsoft's new graphics driver standard known as the Longhorn Driver Display Model.
That name is likely to change, however, because Microsoft recently switched the code-name for it's upcoming operating system from Longhorn to Vista. However, the Vista name may change as well given recent threats of lawsuits from other makers of products also named Vista. Whatever it ends up being called, the new OS will make extensive use of 3D graphics on the desktop. ATI's new drivers will enable developers to write new applications for the operating system that take advantage of the 64-bit architecture and graphics.
