Is it true that mpeg-2 files will play on newer dvd players?? If so, is it possible for me to copy my baby's home movies to cd-r and play them in my home dvd player?? Any info on anything would be appreciated.

In a round about way, yes. What you describe is a VCD (Video CD) but I'm not sure that it's mpeg-2 that's used.
