The Dude February 3rd, 2006 11:30 AM

charger56 February 3rd, 2006 12:35 PM

the bad thing is, is most win98 computers will not work with vista. its hard enough getting them to work with winxp.

charger56 February 3rd, 2006 11:40 PM

what do you mean their hard to get working on XP? if you meet all the requirments wouldnt there be no problems? i was thinking about upgrading to 2000.

smurfy February 3rd, 2006 11:58 PM

Pretty standard Windows support lifecycle. Yes Win95 ceased to be supported a couple of years ago (just after XP came out from memory).

Problem is, some old hardware that is still perfectly serviceable just won't run the latest MS operating systems (even Win2k had some pretty restrictive hardware compatibility issues) and some legacy applications (incl some business apps) are just never going to be 2k/xp/vista compatible.

Just because Microsoft ceases support, deosn't mean the O/S dies. (Just look at the Win95 forum :) )

charger56 February 4th, 2006 12:15 AM

yeahh lol, ok.

We still use 98SE for all our computers, business and personal. I would encourage anyone thinking about upgrading to XP - THINK TWICE!!! For some it works. We discovered that many of the components in the computer are not XP compatible. Also, sometime an upgrade will leave parts of the old system intact, causing a corrupt install. I contacted Microsoft about 6 - 12 months ago about the problems with XP upgrade. They couldn't help me. They didn't even try to connect remotely to my computer. One of the things they told me is how we should have a full install. For a company that says they support XP, it was not impressive. We went back to 98SE.

I thought Microsoft ended 98SE support a long time ago. We have not connected to Microsoft for updates in probably years. ZoneAlarm and Norton Antivirus are kept up to date and we are fine.

I hope things go well if you upgrade. Please backup your data.

I don't care for XP at all, but I can't fault MS for this one. A dirty install of one operating system over another without formatting the drive is just asking for trouble.

nowshining May 17th, 2006 08:05 PM

well I think 2000 might work if I can get it on this 550mhz hp vectra vli8. I have some other taken apart computers. If I get raid working well, I have an xp DELL OEM disk that will install to ANY Dell computer. On this particular computer it does install but hangs the modem which worked fine on the dell optiplex gx300 I have broken (broke pins, i know.. :P worked on one with some pins restuck in, however when trying out my RAID controller i said I GIVE UP... :X and am using the newer/older one this vli8 but I might put that comp. and all others back together however I don't want to reinstall the OS so that's why i am refusing to go back. plus XP is RIDDEN with unsafety. If 98 ain't so safe and its still supported why ain't MS patching it? with the safest XP there was like 100 patches a week..YEESH. Also I was hacked once with XP, altho never with windows 98. :X and yes at that time i had the latest patches at that time... FIX 98's GDI resources problem and then add more compatibility for newer hardware and then your pretty much done. :P

If the resources were fixed 98 would be perfect. ;)

tucker42 May 19th, 2006 11:35 PM

That may be, but MS is in the business of selling software, nothing else. Fixing a previous product brings no new cash in.

nowshining May 20th, 2006 02:29 AM

ah that's where ur wrong I used to think that too, but see Gates is something very few know about his TRUE IDENTITY, trust me I found this out a bit myself this few months ago. Just try the Easter Eggs of his software, in Word 95 or so THE HALL OF TORTURED SOULS, that gave me a clue about who he is really is and moving on, BILL GATES is out to take over the world basically...HE HAS MONEY UP THE U KNOW WHAT and can't fix up an OS, alas I did say he fixed up one or two during the continuing support of 98, but if it is sooo bug ridden and many continue to use it, like i said why not patch up the remaining holes in it until the Support Date he promised. HE WON't be broke I can tell ya that... see I wouldn't be griping if the support wasn't extended like a year or two ago. But promising and then breaking it is something different as if he won't fix up the supposed patches then otherwise if their aren't any being put out that I see then 98 (besides the new hardware not being detected, some minor bugs, etc...) is PERFECTLY SAFE with the updates for security in the updates section so far...

tucker42 May 22nd, 2006 02:47 AM

"FIX 98's GDI resources problem and then add more compatibility for newer hardware and then your pretty much done. "

Not going to happen nowshining, no matter what you want or think.

nowshining May 22nd, 2006 08:53 AM

well tucker I already knew that and 98 is superior in status to or would be for any other of the most current Operating systems. And plus for support for newer hardware I meant Re-sell 98 Cds or exchange them so 98 can auto detect newer devices, however Most Manufacturers if not all do however write drivers for newer hardware for their products..

And GDI is what is really wrong with this Operating system...and that's pretty much all...

charger56 May 24th, 2006 02:58 AM

are you guys keeping 98SE? or are you's upgrading? my Compaq has 98SE, i was thinking about upgrading, i want 2 see what you's were going 2 do, then i'll figure about upgrading 2 a newer OS.

charger56 May 28th, 2006 02:44 AM

im getting another computer like around the end of June, and it has ME on it, would i be able 2 still update Windows even though it's after the end date?

Way May 30th, 2006 06:45 PM

Linux maybe the answer

Maybe better of with a low capacity linux as its free and always has better help. The only thing Microsoft has many updates is for the Holes in the poor made browser engine"Exploer". I use AVANT browser but is updated all the time by the Admin, and runs on the Exploer.

Yes you will still be able to find the updates, however, in my opinion, the 1st thing you need to do IS GET RID OF ME.....it's one of the worse O/S developed and full of bugs...Some will disagree, but "98" is a far better O/S then ME, even the "95" B and C versions are better then ME.

As far as updating ME you will have to look for the updates, but will still be available...

nowshining May 31st, 2006 06:03 AM

I am keeping windows 98 and 98 is just basically 98SE or 98. I can only probably go up to only 2000 with this old machine, xp is a DELL only cd, so no go there 'cause this old machine I have now is a Hewlett packard vli8. And no I ain't upgrading until I get enought to buy it myself.

Windows ME its alright I never did really get to try it out as the emachines i had that came with it (someone donated it), only worked on an emachines but never did have any problems...

The Dude May 31st, 2006 07:28 AM

Win98se was one of the BEST os's ever released :)

Thank you so much, Murf....I have Win XP Pro and XP Home, but I would like to keep Win 98 SE running. I have two 98 SE and both were given to me. The one I have set up is a Compaq Presario....really nice computer.

Thank you again!

nowshining June 22nd, 2006 08:14 AM

well since I now have a better machine, had it for awhile=got it this month, and when I get up enough money I am going to buy XP off ebay.. :) I am selling computer parts cheap from my other computer that are taken apart in my local area-pickup only on a website that allows free online ads.....:) The only thing XP sets apart from 98, 98se or ME that helps is Resources, XP has Virtually unlimted-meaning it goes BY RAM... :) I only trust up to sp1 and fixes, security updates-beyond that I don't trust sp2 nor Vista...I am suspicious of them..

I have tried to dwn load it from Microsoft and have had only bull$#@!!!!!!

zipulrich July 15th, 2006 01:34 AM

I don't know of anywhere you can download it legally (a legit copy). Using a search engine, you should find a zillion places to buy a legal copy (likely under 50 bucks or so) of 98SE.

runsan August 1st, 2006 03:09 PM

The Windows 98 OS, will work fine as long as users keep there anti-virus/malware filters updated. Also, if they stop using Internet Explorer and switch to a more secure browser -like Mozzilla. M$ support for Windows 98 is ending, but it states that there support pages will still be online till July 2007.

deankellham May 23rd, 2007 03:48 PM

I still use 98 on my second pc, which is networked with my xp pro. 98 served me for years. I learnt on 98, and am now relatively good at this computer thing. I would never once slate 98. My only reason for using XP is how pretty much all new software is 2k and above! Ending support, in my opinion, is a terrible idea. For a small company that hasen't spoke the name of their product for years would be understandable, but for MS, who are large, rich, and with 98 being one of the most widely used versions, why shoud spport end. It's like saying "thanks for buying 98 but upgrade to be safe". Why only provide security updates for the newer? Because they're the 100+ versions, whereas 98OEM can be found ligit for a tenner!

Never stop helping valued customers... all it says to me is that we aren't valued!

deankellham June 3rd, 2007 01:22 PM

Most annoying: My 98 PC is 166MHz Pentium MMX, 48MB RAM. Almost pointless to upgrade, and would have to in order to get 2k on there!

The Dude June 3rd, 2007 11:12 PM

166Mhz??

How does it run on that?? I saw someone say on another site they had Win2003 running on 166 also!!!!! (That must be slow as anything (Win2003 on 166Mhz))

deankellham June 7th, 2007 02:57 PM

I'm running 98 on the PC in question with 166! I'm pretty sure you couldn't run 03 on 166, maybe 1.66 GHz is what they meant!

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

Looks like you just did. Just pick the forum that best suits your problem (don't post the same question more than once) and do just what you did here.

reaper_2551 September 17th, 2007 01:14 AM

The Dude September 17th, 2007 01:55 AM

Welcome to CTH!!
