Unhappy Blue screen of death on my Dell laptop

  • I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop.
  • I was shutting it down and it said it was updating. When I turned it back on about 20 minutes later it blue screened right after startup. It didn't even boot to desktop.
  • Its only a little over a month old, I got it for Christmas.
  • It has 4 gigs of RAM and very little of it is being used. So I highly doubt its a RAM issue.
  • I am pretty good with computers since I am in computer repair, but not very good with laptops yet.
  • I didn't have the time to check the error on the blue screen because it went away too fast..
  • I am willing to do anything for my laptop just to get it to boot to desktop again.. I don't mind doing the things that are more complicated, I just want it done soon because all my stuff for school is on it.
    Please help.

Can you boot into safe mode? (Hitting the F8 key at bootup)
If you can, you should be able to do a system restore from within safe mode.

If not, then on the Menu screen (Hitting the F8 key at bootup) try Last Known good configuration.

This is an OS problem. Something got screwed up during the update.

Can you get into safe mode? If you can, try doing a system restore. (Sometimes the last known configuration will work, but most times it won't..) But a system restore prior to this happening may do the trick.

This might be the problem-

I never set Windows Update to automatically download and install the updates for this reason.
