I booted into safe mode via new profile and regular profile and add/remove programs showed the files. Now back in regular mode in regular user profile and still no files show under add/remove programs.

Also, I am able to download IE but it won't run. If I click on the short cut from the desk top; nothing. If I go to Start, All Programs, IE and click on it, nothing. Can't get it to work. I deleted the shortcut to see if that was the problem but still can't get it to work.

OK. Let me do some research on this. Something in Regular Wndows is preventing you from seeing your Add Remove programs list in the registry. It's Christmas tomorrow, so I'll be scarce for a couple of days.

Thank you. I hope you had a great Holiday too, if you celebrate it.

Let's disable the startup for Microsoft security essentials real time scanning and see if that alllows add remove programs to populate for you.

1. Open Microsoft security essential main window.

Go to Settings> real time protection.

Check box (turn on real time protection) > uncheck.

Save changes.

Good luck. Let me know how you do.

dmatt,

Go ahead and reenable Microsoft Securuty Essentials.

Since this seem too be a non issue in Safe Mode, but in REgualr Windows you have the problem, a Clean Boot troubleshoot is the next step to try pinpointing the problem program or service.

Here's a link to the MS page with directions.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

I recommend using the guided help option on that page.

Let me know whether or not you found the problem program or service.

Just saw your post (sometimes I get email notifications and sometimes not). I just tried the guided help but it would not run. Tried three times. I have to run out so I'll try again tomorrow when I get home.

Still can't run the help. It lets me download it and then when I click on it, it asks if I want to run it on this computer or another. I click this computer and it starts and then stops right away with a message that guided help can not start right now.

I did dome searching, and the upshot is that this guided help no longer works. I think the message people get is that it cannot download now. The guided help was written to download more. Unfortunately MS has taken down that information. Guided help has been replaced by the newer MS fixits. I wasn't able to find any fixit to help you perform a clean boot troubleshoot. So, you should have to try the instructions to do it manually, if you're up for it.

At any rate, my oinion is to uninstall Microsoft Security essentials entirely and use Another security program in its place.

Even after uninstalling MSE, it will leave behind a large number of sys files which are not needed and slow down your system. So that will have to be dealt with too.

Haven't done the manual clean boot yet. I'm working from home on a project and don't want to risk something happening. I'll try it this week though.
What security program do you suggest?
