HARD problem

I migrated from a Hewlett packard p6710f with a one terrabyte mechanical hard drive.

I went to this, which has both a small solid state drive, and a large mechanical drive.

Shinobee SSD Ultra 8-Core Gaming PC/Multimedia Desktop Computer - FX 8300 8 x 4.20 GHz - AMD Radeon RX 460 2GB DDR5 Graphics - 8GB DDR3-240GB SSD - 50 (Computers & Accessories)

Things on the solid state drive, C, open rapidly, almost instantly.

On my old computer, things opened okay on the mechanical drive.

BUT....on this new computer, things stored on the subsidiary mechanical drive open so slowly I know something has got to be seriously wrong.
I'm talking about a hanging spinning circle for FIFTEEN minutes before a folder will open.

I also happen to have a mechanical external drive. Things open fine on that. No lag.

What have I done wrong?

I've been told that the operating system is installed on this Solid State Drive. I've been told that any solid state drive will DIE within two years.
How do I migrate and protect my Operating System?
I need this to last at least 8 years like my last computer did.
