Laptop won't accept external hard drive

I have an old laptop with Windows 98SE and formatted in FAT 32. When I plug in my external hard drive (which is NTFS), a box pops up this drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now? All drivers that came with my external hard drive have been installed (Ive been able to use my hard drive on other computers with XP & 2K). What's the problem???

Win98 using FAT32 can't "see" NTFS.

There's a utility on this page that may help but I've never used it so I can't say whether it works. Briefly reading through the page indicates to me that if you mess it up, you'll have a wreck on your hands. As it also says, it will give you read-only access to the NTFS files.
