Having troubles shutting down, running scan disk, defrag, ect...

Hi,

Wondering if someone can help. I have an older computer running on Win98 and I am having problems with it. I haven't been able to perform a scan disk or defrag for quite sometime and the other day upon power up it started in safemode so I decided to try a defrag. It got to about 60-70% and then it performed an illegal operation. To make a long story short, I cannot scan disk or defrag. There are times when it won't power down, just sits at the Win 98 screen. It is running slow, graphic screen refreshes are slow and choppy.

Is there an easy solution that I am not aware of? Can anyone help or give direction. I'm thinking about just buying a new computer but I am not sure if I want to move up to Vista or not. I have heard a lot of bad things about it. Any thoughts?

What version of "98" 1st Edition or Second Edition (SE)?

There is a shutdown supplement that has solved most of the shutdown issues.

For SE you can find the supplement HERE
