Sorry, I've been away from my computers for a couple of days. Had some things to finish. I tried the go.microsoft.com link but it did not resolve the issue of my add/remove program files not showing up. I'm going through Control Panel to access the add/remove programs. Should I try somewhere else?

This may have something to do with your Internet Explorer not working correctly too.

First, when you open Add Remove programs, see if scrolling down to the end of the page shows any entries at all.. Let me know.

Then we'lll check the registry to see if the correct entries exist there as step 1.

Look for these folders please and let me know if either exists. And if you see a file named spuninst.exe inside. Don't do anything other than look.

C:\windows\ie8\spuninst
C:\Windows.1\ie8\spuninst

Hi,
No files show at all. Can't even scroll because there's nothing there. Just a blank page.

Checked Windows and Windows.1 but did not see those two files.

on November 15th you posted this.

Quote:
I tried to uninstall Java. It says The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed (I am in safe mode).
The failure was because you were in safe mode. However, were you using Add Remove Programs to uninstall? I'm trying to see if we can pinpoint when the problem began.

If you're up for it, you might try installing Internet Explorer 8 and see if it succeeds. If so, have a look at Add Remove Programs again to check whether or not it's still blank.

No, it was not and still is not empty when I am in safe mode. It's only when I log on in regular mode in my user profile that it is empty. I just re-checked in safe mode and the programs are there.

That's odd. Let me give this some thought. Offhand, it makes me wonder if you have some program runnuing in regular windows mode which is not running in Safe Mode.

When you were in safe mode, you were signed into a different profile.

Let's try something. Create a new User. Sign into that new user in regular Windows mode and see if add remove programs is still empty. Let me know.

Let's have a look at a registry key. While in Regular Windows and signed into your regular profile please follow these steps.

Copy the contents of the code box to notepad.
Name the file checkit.bat
Save as Type: All files
Save on your desktop.

Double click on checkit.bat to run it.
When finished, a file named checkit.txt will open.
Please post the contents of checkit.txt into your next reply.
Code:
echo Checking for user uninstall policiies > checkit.txt

reg query HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall /s >> checkit.txt 2>&1

Start notepad checkit.txt
exit

I did create a new profile/account and logged in under regular use. Nothing shows up in add/remove programs.

OK. Something in regular mode is keeping Add Remove programs from populating.

Let me give this more thought.

In the meantime, we can either use another prgram to perform uninstalls, or enable the windows installer service in safe mode so you can uninstall from there.

Can you boot to Safe Mode and log in under that new profile please? Then check to see if add remove programs is empty.

Then do the same using your usual profile.

Please let me know what you find.

Also, were you able to install IE8?
