Windows 10 Updates SLOWED System

I wait a couple of months before doing updates, in hopes bugs and such got fixed by the time I update. So this weekend I finally caught up with a few. One was marked as an October update, and some Flash and .NETs. I am pretty sure the big update is the culprit.
Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809
Since that was updated, which took some hours on my aging unit, the computers has since come to a crawl. I removed the windows.old folder, done a cleanup of files and registry, looked for new startup entries, defrag, chkdsk, etc. It also wanted me to remove Sandboxie saying it was incompatible.
Just now the OS is constantly near 100% CPU, and I can find find a process that is the culprit. Just everything adds up with whatever got updated. The system is barely usable. Firefox, OpenOffice, a game, it all takes several minutes of the hard drive reading and writing to load, and possibly function.
I know I need a new system but has anyone else had recent issues with updates from October on?
