Thinkpad 600E?! It might just want to be retired! :-)

Its been a while, but I think 174 is a hard drive error, which, due to its age might be expected. You might be able to order a new drive for it, but as for the data on it...

With XP, you'll want at least a 4gb drive, and then depending on what you'll use it for more. But a drive can cost between $50-$80. I would not get anything bigger than a 20gb drive for the 600E though, it was a good machine in its time, but its getting old and the rest of the components will start to go unless youre gentle with it. Depending on the machine type listed under the laptop... this place has drives, can't speak for their "integrity" though, never used them: http://www.kahlon.com/result.asp?modelid=10544

I had XP on mine too, but its just chugs away on the slow 256mb ram. Might be good just for email and surfing. Good luck!
