Scanner question

I found a Mustek flatbed scanner in my pile of old stuff yesterday. I'm currently running Windows 10 and RedHat (dual boot).
Aside from using thermite, what's the best way to set this old scanner on fire?

If you mean how to properly get rid of it in an environmentally safe way, take it to an electronics recycling center. The one in my area will actually pay you a few pennies on the pound for the scrap value of the steel, aluminum and precious metals (if any) inside. They take all electronics except CRT monitors and TVs. They even take drives and let you watch as they toss them their hard drive shredder - pretty cool to watch.

If no electronics recycling center near you, Best Buy will take it and properly dispose of it, along with all your old Li Ion and SLA batteries. Some even take old tube and compact florescent light bulbs.

If you mean how do you get it working with those operating systems, I have no clue if there are no current drivers for it - except maybe in a VM XP environment with W10.

Oh, almost forgot. The recycling center here will not take CRT monitors and TVs unless I pay them $10 processing fee for each. This is because there is a tiny drop of mercury inside the cathode ray "tubes". Besides the fact it is very dangerous to pop open a CRT due to extreme implosion/explosion risks resulting in shards of glass flying about, it costs a lot of money to properly and safely dispose of the mercury.

Great info, thank you!

No, I mean I literally want to set it on fire, maybe roast some marshmallows ya know?

Well, I hear you on that. I've had a few pieces of electronics I wanted to burn too. The problem is, that are many materials in electronics that let off all sorts of toxic fumes and smoke when burned. Best to just take it to a recycling center and help keep our air and water supply clean.

I really hate seeing perfectly good equipment get thrown in to the Recycling Bin. :(

What is the maximum scanning DPI?
If it is higher than 1200 DPI.
There are probably some schools that would be interested in it.
If you donated it to them.

Thou,
They're also going to want the Drivers, Programs, and Cables that came with it.

I agree but that is just a fact of life everyone must accept.

Perfectly good black & white TVs were replaced with color. Perfectly good color CRT TVs and monitors were replaced with LCD TVs and Monitors. 4:3 monitors by 16:9 and 16:10 widescreen.

Then there's 8-Tracks, cassettes, reel-to-reel, dial telephones, countless wireless phones, cell phones, dot-matrix printers, countless hard drives going back to my first 5MB (yes, 5MB harddrive) on my old C64.

Retiring and replacing outdated, superseded, obsolete "legacy" hardware before it dies is just one of the costs of progress.

lately I have been taking my obsolete electronic stuff to goodwill. they even take broken electronics and extra cables.

Digerati December 24th, 2020 06:28 PM

And Goodwill will "wipe" your hard drives too! :)

Thermite does an outstanding job of wiping hard drives. I simply want to watch some hardware flame up.

LOL So does a 16lb double jack.

Back in the day when getting rid of drives that might contain sensitive information and before we got a drive shredder, if a faulty drive could not be accessed to be properly wiped, we would drill 3 holes through the drive platters, then finish it off with the sledge hammer.

Yeah,
The old "Drill holes through the drive", is always the most excepted way of destroying hard drives.

But, I was requested to do a more through job, on one Hard Drive.
It came out of a government owned computer.
The computer was being sold off to a private individual.
Thus, The old hard drive couldn't go with it.
I was instructed to follow NSA guide lines on Hard Drive disposal.
This entailed cracking open the drive, and removing the platters.
Then the platters are to be ground to dust.
The dust is collected and put into a zip lock type bag.
You send the bag to the NSA where they will store it.
Then when they have accumulated enough bags, they will be put in to a incinerator, completely destroying it.

Makes me ponder as to what kind of secrets the hard drives had on them,
for the NSA to take such stringent disposal procedures.

Just bumped into your thread. As for me, using thermite or a sledgehammer probably isn't the best way to handle it. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the Mustek scanner on both your Windows and RedHat systems? That's usually a good place to start. If you're still having trouble, you might consider donating or recycling the scanner. By the way, if you're in the market for a new scanner, you might want to check out Smart Engine. It's an awesome piece of tech that can help streamline the scanning process and make it super efficient. Just food for thought!

Really? That's awesome! Two and a half years later you come here to spam us and give me some information that doesn't address my original question. I salute you, Bot.
