No surprise there as in safe mode a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows are used, meaning alot of the bad stuff doesn't go to work until you get into normal mode.

As for the grinding noise problem you have at startup, I had that once and it turned out to be a bloody fan going south on me. Replaced the fan, noise stopped at startup.
