In my opinion keep 98 and if you want to go to XP, buy another computer. We just both one on eBay for just over $300, comes with XP installed and working and 30 day warrenty. Not all are like that...

Don't know if this helps or not. We have tried installing network protocols, games, etc. on a Win 98SE computer. It says insert disk and then it can't find file (some are .dll files)....
