depends on what you use the machine for. I only have 768 in mine...but ran it for the longest time with 512 and it worked just fine for what I do....but now that I process video and sound frequently...

in most cases they slide into a preformed rail and screw in....however in some other cases you need to attach drive rails to the cd drive for them to slide in and out on....if this is the case not...

not so much defective as certain cd burners and dvd burners can be really picky about the media used in them. Once you find a brand that works stick with it....trying others will just frustrate you.
