Install one of those programs for recovery on another partition, not the one with the lost data. And try not to use the partition where the folders used to be.

There are programs for defrag such as Diskeeper or O&O defrag so you can try your luck with them, but I don't think there will be any significant difference.

Right click the folder, customize, change icon or change picture. This is not very convenient if you have many flolders.If I think of a better way, I'll let you know.

I would leave it there, only change the drive...

I would leave it there, only change the drive letter if that bothers you. You can mount images using that drive.

Yes, just leave them alone where they are, they're perfectly normal. If you haven't seen them on other computers, the reason is that they didn't have hidden files displayed.

Install Firefox or Opera and use it instead of IE. These 2 are in all ways better (not just concerning your problem) and as a user, you won't notice any difference except faster loading of web pages.
