'Error loading operating system' (Moved from XP Forum by AM)

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude C800 laptop.
When you turn it on, the loading screen comes up (with the Dell logo), loads, and then it says 'Error loading operating system'.

We brought it to a computer repair shop and they said a part needed to be replaced that was not worth replacing.
A relative (who is a computer programmer) who looked at it said it got overheated and the fan wouldn't turn on.

I posted about this on another message board a few months ago and someone replied that they thought it wouldn't be hard to fix.

Do I need a reboot/install CD or something like that? Do I need to change something in the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,
Chreldorm
