Comp will not boot

Hi all.

Turning on this comp, it never boots. The monitor stays black. All of the fans turn on when the power is pushed, but that is all.

I thought the motherboard might be bad, so i sent it for RMA. Just got it back, and still have the problem.

I also tried a different video card. Problem is still there.
I tried a different power supply as well.

This is really getting ridiculous, and I obviously just need the comp to work.

Let me know if you have any ideas/suggestions.

Welcome to CYH

There is a 4 prong connector from the power supply to the motherboard, it is a +12v connector. Most newer boards have them does your's? Is it connected?

Need more info

Would it be possible that something in the case is bad? Like grounding or something, or something in the power switch thing?

Since you had the symptoms with the old mobo and I assume you replaced with an identical one, then a ground problem probably does not exist. However, if for some reason when you installed the replacement board you did not use all the standoffs and one was left in, it could be touching the motherboard traces.

Memory can also cause the symptoms your having.

If you hit the power button and the fans come on, keyboard lights flash, you tried another power supply and video card, then it points to either the processor or memory.

If more than one memory stick, take out leave one in, no boot switch....

You know, It's been way over a year, but I cannot remember if this specific problem was fixed or not. (This isn't my computer)

Well, either way, the same problem occurred again. Being myself, I tried the exact same troubleshooting steps that I tried when i started this thread. Which is pretty funny, since I got the motherboard tested, then swapped power supplies, and then swapped video cards.

Turns out just ONE of the sticks of memory was bad. Having both in wouldn't allow it to boot. Thanks Murf.

So for the archive this thread was updated with an answer, in case people in the future search and have the same problem.
