Pop-ups, "Found New Hardware - MX390 series printer"; "Found New Hardware - USB,etc "

Recently through this forum I was able to enable my Dell laptop to detect my Canon printer. Now that the printer is working fine, I'm unable to get rid of
the incessant pop-ups, "Found New Hardware - MX390 series printer", "Found
New Hardware - Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller", and the like. The
printer is shown as "Ready" and it's port is shown as "USB Virtual Printer Port
for Canon MX390 series Printer". Under Device Manager "MX390 series" is
listed under "Imaging Devices"; Two listings of "Universal Serial Bus (USB)
Controller" are under "Other Devices", and under "Universal Serial Bus (USB)
Controller" there are numerous listings of "Unknown device", "USB Printing
Support", "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller", and one "MX390 series".
After deleting all of these, they reappear, along with the pop-up/window
"Found New Hardware, etc." They absolutely will not go away! I'd be most
grateful for help from anyone. Thanks...

Welcome back,

Try rebooting then at the first Text screen or when the Dell logo appears tap F2 until the message Entering Setup appears.

Once in SETUP search around the menu's and find something that list USB, make sure anything that reefer's to USB is enabled, particularly Legacy if you have it. If you change anything, save & exit.

If there are no entries in there for USB, then Restore the BIOS to the Default Configuration.

Pop-ups, "Found New Hardware - MX390 series printer"; "Found New Hardware - USB,etc

Thanks, Murf! I'm satisfied all in my BIOS is o.k. Blows my mind that,
while my printer is working fine with my computer, I steadily get the pop-
up/window, "Found New Hardware - Windows Needs to Install Driver
Software for your Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller". At present
my printer is shown as "Ready". In the Device Manager, shown under
"Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controllers" are: one instance of "MX390 series";
seven instances of "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller", seven instances
of "Unknown device", and two instances of "USB Printing Support". Nothing
I do gets rid of the pop-up/window. Would greatly appreciate whatever
further you can do to help, Murf. Thanks...

I don't think it has anything to do with the printer, it is somehow finding another USB device. Are you using a USB mouse? Web Cam? any type of external USB device?

Did you find any USB entries in BIOS Setup?

Thanks, Murf. That's what's so puzzling...I have no other USB devices, nor
an external USB device. Also, no USB entries found in BIOS setup. After
many hours of searching...forums, etc., the "Found New Hardware" message
has at least hidden itself for the time being. Because I don't know what con-
tributed to the solution, I'm not confident it won't appear again. Know that
I truly appreciate your efforts...

If it comes back advise, as there are basically 3 files that drive USB and one could be corrupt. But if all is working and its gone for now, just leave it alone.

For reference the 3 files are:

C:\Windows|system32\drivers\usbstor.sys
C;\Windows\inf\usbstor.inf
C:\windows\inf\usbstor.pnf

But I would not mess with them, if your curious you can look and see if you have them, just don't mess with them.

Does that MFP printer have a USB-in slot and a card reader?

Hugh, I've read your other thread about getting it working to this point and this ort of issue arises when either:
a) The multifunction device only installed drivers for one of its functions (i.e. the printer). You may then be prompted to continue to install the rest of the functions of the device e.g. Fax, scanner, USB hub, Card reader (if present). You have said your printer functions as a printer, what about the other functions like scanning?

b) The drivers were all installed but the device was already connected prior to device driver installation, contrary to the driver installation instructions which normally expects device connection mid-way through the process. This can leave "ghost" devices in your device manager which will continue to prompt for a driver installation, even though the actual device driver is installed.

Either way, the process to fix this normally involves cleaning out the corrupted device install and starting again. You may not want to do this since the function you want is working (printing).

smurfy...thanks for your help & great patience! (Murf, as well) I'm ready to
start from scratch...get rid of everything. I'm away from home for a good
while, so don't have access to my disc or manual that came with the printer, and the online manual isn't helping to resolve this problem. If you will, continue with the help you have in mind. Should I follow through with trying to locate any corrupt files that Murf referred to? I'm ready to begin, if you kindly will continue. Many thanks...

seven instances of "Unknown device"

That is probably what is causing the problem.

Ok you need to count the number of USB slots you have on the computer.
For each USB slot you should have two entries in your Device Manager

1. Root (or something similar)
2. The name of the driver

Also don't know if you did this but try running the troubleshooter:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...th-usb-devices

Also download USBDview
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Scroll almost to the bottom of the page and you will see download

This will tell us what USB devices are being used.

Murf...many thanks. I have four (4) USB slots...only using the one for my
printer. I ran the TROUBLESHOOTER and it did not solve my problem. I ran
USBDeView with the following results: MX390 series-Vendor Specific (listed 2 times); MX390 series-Unknown (1 time); USB Mass Storage Device (6 times);
USB Printing Support-Printer (5 times); USB Charger-HID (2 times); USB
Composite Device-Unknown ( 4 times); Patriot Memory USB Device-Mass
Storage (1 time). Three (3) instances of device being used: "green-yes" by
USB Printing Support-Printer (2 instances); "green-yes" by MX390 series-
Unknown (1 instance). There are no other instances of being used ("green-
yes"). Do these results offer any hint as to my problem, Murf? Sure trust
so! Stay with me, if you will. Thanks!

Murf...my computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, maybe 8 years old. I am
NOT using a thumb/flash drive, a USB mouse, or wireless keyboard or wireless
mouse. A few years back I used a wireless mouse for a short time, and have
used flash drives...but, it's been a good while. Hope this helps...Thanks!
