the hefty price of piracy

A couple of weeks ago a guy in New Zealand got the biggest sentence, for copying and selling over 1000 DVDs, of 2 years in prison and a fine of $5000. And apparently here in NZ if you are caught with downloaded/pirated music or movies you get a massive fine of $50,000 per pirated movie/song! Now if thats not enough to put you off then i dont know what is

Here in Brazil, the police can't do anything if you download files (in theory they can, but in practice our laws are confusing and contradicting, so it is neither legal nor illegal), but if you sell the pirated stuff, it is illegal.

What I think industries do is just take out the big time pirates arrgh! And set an example with a random moocher.

I used to download movies and music from the net illegally. But, I can tell you one out of ten of those movies are worth downloading. Music still can be downloaded pretty quick and easy it's no lie but, I quit downloading music after I realized the music in this day and age isn't even worth getting free. Haven't downloaded anything illegally for about a year now. Deleted all my old junk when i had to reformat. Glad I did it to, that music really sucked.

Record labels/software companies (and most other companies in fact) only want money (I've seen this called "wild capitalism" by some authors).

Not to talk about DRM: this thing makes me angry. I find it absurd.

I think that a "fair use" license (i.e. you can download, but you can't sell it) for music/video would be OK for most people (including me).
