Dell laptop

I have a dell laptop Smart step and originally it was getting an "error loading operating system message" I was able to format the hard drive with quick format option with windows xp disk. However the machine will not stay powered on log enough to install the operating system. After a certain amount of time the laptop shuts off. It did this when I tried to format with the long version, thats why I had to use the quick format option. So I am leaning towards a possible bad power supply but I wanted to hear all of your opinions as to what could be causing the problem. The bios recognizes the hard drive and I deleted the previous partition.

Enter the bios. If your system stays on for a long period of time then you don't have a power supply problem.
