Windows 7 not installing updates because of Windows 10

Title sounds weird, so I'll explain.

I have Windows 7. I never installed Windows 10 and I'm fairly certain it wasn't downloaded (my wife uses this PC as well and isn't computer savvy, but I don't think she clicked anything to download it)

anyways, I go to Windows Update as it keeps telling me there are updates to install. When it opens up it says:

Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready
You need to restart your PC to begin the installation. This might take a while, but we'll let you know when it's done.

If I click on Check For updates, a box pops up saying:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because you must first restart the computer so that a previous installation can be completed.

So I restarted the PC. Nothing happened, the computer shut down and restarted the same way it has always done for several years. I go back to Windows update and the same issue is there.

Is there a way to rectify this issue? I'd prefer not to download Windows 10, but if I must, I can live with it.

If downloading Windows 10 is the only solution, is there any way of still getting the full version for free?

just do a disk cleanup

click start - search for Disk Cleanup - right click and run as admin - Click on Clean up system files, and select the drive again. In the list you’ll see Temporary Windows installation files. select it and click OK to remove the contents.

If the computer reserved a copy of Windows 10 before July 29th then it would be "Free", but it would of had to be installed by July 29th, which obviously yours has not.

So after much mucking about I found that a part of my registry was missing/damaged.

I merged some stuff into my registry that I found at the Microsoft website and that worked.

I will try and locate it again so as to be helpful for others.
