I like Asus motherboards, but I hate their website, and their documentation needs some work too. According to your manual, downloaded (eventually! - good luck!) from here, on page 2.11, "The motherboard comes with four Double Data Rate (DDR) Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets", but then throughout the manual, several photos and drawings clear show only 3 slots!
These sites have RAM wizards that scan your system and determine compatible RAM (or you can manually plug in the PC make and model, or motherboard make and model, and the wizard will list compatible RAM): Crucial Corsair (manual data entry only - no system scanner) Kingston (manual data entry only - no system scanner) MemoryStock 18004Memory - comes recommended, but I have not purchased from there. According to Crucial here, your motherboard supports up to three 1Gb modules. This agrees with your manual. And both indicate the maximum size is 1Gb of DDR400 (PC3200). My standard recommendation for Windows XP is 1Gb per CPU core. 2Gb or more for all Windows Vista systems where all graphics features are to be used. |

18004Memory will sell used memory so be careful, I've ordered before though I did recieve my order, they sent the wrong type of ram 3 times and never got it right. Though my experience may differ from yours just lookout thats all.

Oooh - thanks DJ. That's the first bad thing I have heard about them. Had you used them before or was that the first (and only?) time?
I can put up with a company messing up once in awhile - IF they correct their mistakes promptly and fairly, and treat me with some level of respect during the process - as though they actually appreciated me choosing them for my supplies, and cared about "word of mouth advertising", like this thread here. |

Yes, but don't go overboard. The "sweet spot" for XP with single core CPUs is 1Gb. Anything over that and the performance gained is minimal at best. With dual core CPUs, then 2Gb is a good amount - beyond that is a waste for most people - the money would be wiser put towards a better video card!

Wat wif?
Dual core is basically two CPUs on a single die (computer chip). According to your manual - download one if you don't have it - on page XI, your motherboard has a 754 socket. The Asus website, here shows the CPUs supported by your board. I don't believe the 754 socket supports any dual core CPUs. |

Thanks. My list was to show sites that had "RAM wizards". I will make sure I don't recommend 18004Memory as a place to purchase RAM.

well my CPU is a AMD athlon 64 3200+ so can i put like a 1gb ram in 1 slot and my other 256 in da other slot? or put both my 256 in the last 2 slots?

You can put the 256 in the other slots, but the system will slow down to the speed of the slowest RAM - and my guess is your 256 is old, therefore slow. So you would probably be better off tossing the 256 modules in the trash.

it will still see and use all the ram in the system. he was just saying that the speed of the ram would be slower. Usually its nothing noticeable. |
