New Pope!

With the imminent appointment of a new Pope, it may be appropriate to revisit a tale from the days of our late Pope.

Pope John Paul II was walking one day in the gardens of the Vatican, deep in prayer. Suddenly there appeared before him a vision of Jesus Christ. The Pope fell to his knees and wept. Christ comforted him, and offered to deal with whatever was causing him such anguish.

"Will there ever," asked the Pope, "be married priests in the Catholic church?"
"Not in your lifetime," answered Jesus.

The Pope thought he would try a further question.

"Will there ever be women priests in the Catholic church?"
"Not in your lifetime," answered Jesus. Somewhat encouraged, the Pope tried another question.

"Will there ever," he asked, "be another Polish pope?"

"Not in my lifetime," answered the immortal one.

Funny. While growing up in an Italian family and being Catholic, I thought there would always be an Italian Pope. Beeeeeep. Wrong.
Now we have a German Pontiff but he's 78 years old, so no telling what nationality the next one will be in a couple of years.

It wasn't past his lifetime when the joke originated. And he could very well have seen the voting of a new Pope in his lifetime.....not now of course.
The Pope's position is for life, but a pope can step down if he feels he can no longer fulfill his duties. That has happened three times in the 2,000-year history of the church. The last time a pope stepped down was 600 years ago.

The Jokes Forum isn't the place for this kind of discussion but since you mentioned it...
The SF Gate says:
"In his memoirs, he wrote of being enrolled in Hitler's Nazi youth movement against his will when he was 14 in 1941, when membership was compulsory. He says he was soon let out because of his studies for the priesthood."

If you wish to continue the discussion please post a new topic or comment in one of the other threads in the Open Discussion forum.

Let's leave the Jokes forum for funny stuff.
